Kaal sarp dosha: what it is and how much it matters

Kaal sarp dosha is a birth-chart pattern in which all seven planets from the Sun to Saturn sit on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis. It has 12 named types (Anant to Sheshnag) based on the house Rahu occupies. It is not found by name in the classical texts and became popular only in the last century, so many astrologers give it little weight. When it is read, the focus is on the houses of Rahu and Ketu and on Rahu or Ketu dasha periods.

How to check for kaal sarp dosha

  1. Find Rahu and Ketu in your birth chart. They are always exactly opposite each other, splitting the chart into two halves.
  2. Look at the seven planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.
  3. If all seven fall in one half, moving from Rahu toward Ketu, the pattern is called kaal sarp. If they fall in the half from Ketu toward Rahu, some astrologers call it kaal amrit instead.
  4. If any planet sits in the same sign as a node or in the other half, it is partial or absent.

The 12 types of kaal sarp dosha

The type is named after the house Rahu sits in. Ketu is always in the house opposite (the 7th from Rahu).

What it is said to mean

Astrologers who use the pattern describe it as intensity: long stretches of effort, delays, then sudden breakthroughs, with the themes of the houses Rahu and Ketu occupy in sharp focus. Rahu shows where you hunger for more; Ketu shows where you already have skill and tend to detach.

Read on its own, kaal sarp says little. Planet strength, house lordships, yogas and the running dasha decide far more of how life actually unfolds.

A calm reading

  • It is a modern idea, not a classical dosha.
  • It is common, and plenty of people with it live full, successful lives.
  • Rahu and Ketu dashas (18 and 7 years in the Vimshottari system) are when the node axis is most active. See the dasha guide.
  • No pattern in a chart obliges you to pay for a remedy.

Frequently asked questions

What is kaal sarp dosha?

Kaal sarp dosha (kaal sarp yoga) is a chart pattern in which all seven visible planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) fall on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis, hemmed in between the two nodes.

Is kaal sarp dosha mentioned in classical texts?

Not by that name. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and the other major classical texts describe sarpa yogas, but not kaal sarp dosha as it is used today. It became popular in the 20th century, and many traditional astrologers do not use it at all.

What is partial kaal sarp dosha?

If one or more planets sit exactly on the Rahu-Ketu axis (in the same sign as a node) or just outside it, the pattern is called partial or broken. Most astrologers who use kaal sarp give a partial one little weight.

How rare is kaal sarp dosha?

It is not rare. Because the nodes sit opposite each other and the seven planets often bunch together, the pattern appears in a noticeable minority of charts and runs for months at a time when the planets cluster. Many successful people have it.

Do I need a kaal sarp puja?

No chart pattern requires you to spend money. Rituals are a personal and cultural choice. Astrologically, the pattern is read through the houses Rahu and Ketu occupy and your running dasha, especially Rahu and Ketu periods.
