Mangal dosha: what being manglik actually means

Mangal dosha (kuja dosha, manglik) is present when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a birth chart. Because 6 of 12 houses qualify, roughly half of all charts show it from the lagna. It matters only in marriage matching, where it is traditionally balanced by a partner who also has it, and it is often cancelled by Mars's sign, Jupiter's aspect or the specific house and sign involved.

The houses that cause mangal dosha

Mars in houseTraditional reading
1stSelf and temperament: a direct, quick-tempered, driven nature in the relationship.
2ndFamily and speech: sharp words and money friction at home. Some traditions leave the 2nd out.
4thHome and domestic peace: restlessness at home, property matters.
7thMarriage and partnership: the most discussed placement, intensity aimed straight at the partner.
8thLongevity and joint finances: sudden changes, in-laws, shared money.
12thBed comforts, expenses and distance: spending, separation by travel or work.

Houses are counted from the lagna (ascendant). Many astrologers also count from the Moon and from Venus, and treat the dosha as strong only when it shows from two or three of these points.

How to check if you are manglik

  1. Get an accurate birth chart. The lagna changes about every two hours, so birth time decides which house Mars is in.
  2. Find the house of Mars from the lagna, then from the Moon and Venus.
  3. Apply the cancellation rules (below) before calling the chart manglik.
  4. Compare with the partner's chart. Two manglik charts are traditionally considered balanced.

Cancellation (dosha bhanga)

  • Both partners have mangal dosha.
  • Mars is in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn).
  • Jupiter aspects or joins Mars, or Jupiter or Venus sits in the 1st or 7th house.
  • Sign-specific exceptions: 2nd house in Gemini or Virgo, 4th in Aries or Scorpio, 7th in Capricorn or Cancer, 8th in Sagittarius or Pisces, 12th in Taurus or Libra.

Lists differ between traditions, but once these rules are applied, a much smaller share of charts carry an active dosha.

How much it matters in kundli matching

Mangal dosha is separate from the 36-point guna milan score. A high guna score with a mangal mismatch, or a modest score with both partners manglik, are both common. Naksha's compatibility score treats the dosha as a modifier: no change when both partners have it or neither does, and a reduction of up to 8% when only one does, weighted by the house (8th strongest, 2nd mildest).

Marriage decisions rest on far more than one placement. Treat mangal dosha as a prompt to understand temperament and expectations, not as a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

What is mangal dosha?

Mangal dosha (also kuja dosha or being manglik) is a marriage-matching factor in Vedic astrology. It is present when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart. It is read as extra Mars energy aimed at partnership and home.

How common is mangal dosha?

Very common. Mars falls in 6 of the 12 houses that count, so on the lagna alone roughly half of all charts show it. Checked from the Moon and Venus too, most people have it from at least one point. That is one reason many astrologers apply the cancellation rules before calling anyone manglik.

Is mangal dosha cancelled after age 28?

That is a popular belief that Mars "matures" around 28. Classical texts do not cancel the dosha by age. A more reliable reading looks at the cancellation conditions in the chart itself and at the partner's chart.

Can a manglik marry a non-manglik?

Yes. Traditional matching prefers two manglik charts or a non-manglik chart with a strong compensating placement, but the dosha is one factor among many. Naksha applies it as a modifier of up to 8% on the compatibility score, only when one partner has it and the other does not.

When is mangal dosha cancelled?

Common cancellation rules: both partners are manglik; Mars is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn); Mars is aspected by or joined with Jupiter; or the dosha house is the 2nd for Mars in Gemini or Virgo, the 4th in Aries or Scorpio, the 7th in Capricorn or Cancer, the 8th in Sagittarius or Pisces, or the 12th in Taurus or Libra. Traditions differ on the exact list.
