Sade sati: what it is and when it runs for your Moon sign

Sade sati is the roughly 7½-year period when Saturn transits the sign before your natal Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. It comes about every 30 years in three phases of about 2½ years each: rising, peak and setting. Saturn has been in sidereal Pisces since 29 March 2025, so Aquarius, Pisces and Aries Moon signs are in sade sati now; Taurus starts on 3 June 2027.

The three phases

  • Rising (12th from the Moon). Saturn enters the sign before your Moon sign. Expenses, sleep, travel and letting go of old commitments tend to come up.
  • Peak (over the Moon). Saturn transits your Moon sign. This is usually the heaviest phase emotionally: more responsibility, more scrutiny of how you live and work.
  • Setting (2nd from the Moon). Saturn moves to the sign after your Moon sign. Family, savings and speech are in focus, and the pressure gradually eases.

Each phase lasts about 2½ years because Saturn spends that long in a sign. When Saturn turns retrograde near a sign boundary, it can step back for a few months, so a phase can start, pause and restart.

Dhaiya (small panoti)

Saturn's transit through the 4th or the 8th sign from your Moon is called dhaiya, or small panoti, and lasts about 2½ years. It is read in a similar way to sade sati, with home and peace of mind in focus for the 4th, and sudden changes and health for the 8th. While Saturn is in Pisces (until June 2027), Sagittarius Moon has the 4th-house dhaiya and Leo Moon the 8th-house dhaiya.

How to read sade sati in your own chart

  • Saturn's role in your chart. For Taurus and Libra lagna, Saturn is a yogakaraka (the most helpful planet), so sade sati often brings solid, earned gains.
  • Saturn's natal strength. Saturn in Capricorn, Aquarius or exalted in Libra handles the transit better than a debilitated Saturn in Aries.
  • Ashtakavarga bindus. A sign with 4 or more Saturn bindus usually gives an easier transit than one with 2 or fewer.
  • The running dasha. A Saturn dasha or antardasha during sade sati makes it more noticeable; a strong Jupiter or Venus period softens it.

Sade sati rewards patience, routine and honest work, and punishes shortcuts. Treat it as a period to build structure, not one to fear.

Frequently asked questions

How long does sade sati last?

About seven and a half years: roughly 2½ years in each of three phases, as Saturn moves through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Retrograde motion can stretch a phase by a few months.

Which Moon signs are in sade sati now?

Saturn has been in sidereal Pisces since 29 March 2025. That puts Aquarius Moon in the setting phase, Pisces Moon in the peak phase and Aries Moon in the rising phase. Saturn enters Aries on 3 June 2027, which ends Aquarius sade sati (finally on 23 February 2028, after a retrograde return) and starts it for Taurus.

Is sade sati always bad?

No. Sade sati is a period of pressure and restructuring, not a curse. Many people build careers, marry or buy homes during it. How it feels depends on where Saturn sits and what it rules in your own chart, your running dasha, and the Ashtakavarga strength of the signs Saturn crosses.

How many times does sade sati come in a lifetime?

Saturn takes about 29.5 years to go round the zodiac, so sade sati returns roughly every 30 years. Most people meet it two or three times.

What is the difference between sade sati and dhaiya?

Dhaiya (small panoti) is a 2½-year Saturn transit through the 4th or 8th sign from your Moon. Sade sati covers the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon and lasts about 7½ years. Right now (Saturn in Pisces) Sagittarius Moon is in the 4th-house dhaiya and Leo Moon in the 8th-house dhaiya.

Is sade sati based on my Sun sign or Moon sign?

Your Moon sign (rashi), in the sidereal zodiac. If you only know your Western Sun sign, it will not tell you whether you are in sade sati. You need your birth date, time and place to find the Moon sign.
